
I run a health and performance business, so this may sound like an unusual thing for me to say, but do not spend money on my services, supplements, recovery technology, or another health hack until regular exercise has become your priority.
That does not mean professional support has no value. Testing can reveal where you are starting, coaching can turn vague intentions into a workable plan, and recovery services may help you manage the demands of that plan. However, none of those services can produce the physical adaptations that occur when you consistently challenge your heart, lungs, muscles, and nervous system. They can guide the process, but they cannot do the movement for you.
This is good news because the foundation does not require an expensive membership, a device or a shelf of supplements. You can begin with walking, appropriate resistance exercises, balance work and shorter periods of movement throughout the day. Once that routine exists, services such as body-composition testing and VO2 max assessment can make your efforts more focused.
That is the order we use at Supercell Health, build the foundation, measure the starting point, then use the information to shape a plan that suits the person following it.

Why the free foundation is often overlooked
Health marketing naturally gravitates towards products because products are easy to package and sell. A supplement comes in a bottle, a wearable produces an attractive dashboard, and a recovery treatment can feel more advanced than going for a brisk walk. Exercise is less glamorous because its value comes from repetition rather than novelty.
The problem begins when people try to optimise the smaller details while leaving regular movement out of the week. They may know their sleep score, take several supplements and book recovery sessions, yet still lack the aerobic fitness, strength and balance that everyday life requires. In that situation, adding another product is unlikely to address the missing foundation.
The current Australian 24-hour movement guidelines give adults aged 18 to 64 a practical framework. They recommend being active on most days, completing at least 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity on most days, doing muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days each week, and including regular mobility, balance and coordination work. They also advise people to break up prolonged periods of sitting.
Those recommendations are a destination, not a demand to transform your life overnight. If you have been inactive, ten minutes of walking that you repeat throughout the week is a better starting point than an exhausting program you abandon after a few sessions. The first aim is to create a level of movement your body can manage and your schedule can hold. From there, duration, intensity and complexity can increase as your capacity improves.
What the longevity research can and cannot tell us
The written source that inspired this campaign presents exercise as a central part of healthy ageing. Research supports the connection between physical activity, functional capacity and long-term health, but the figures need to be read in context rather than treated as personal guarantees.
A 2025 life-table analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine estimated that average life expectancy among Americans over 40 could increase by 5.3 years if everyone were as active as the most active quarter of the population. For people in the least active quarter, the model estimated that an additional hour of walking could correspond to about 6.3 hours of added life expectancy. These are population estimates based on modelling, so they do not mean that one particular walk buys an exact number of extra hours for an individual. What the analysis does suggest is that people who currently move the least may have the greatest opportunity to improve their long-term outlook by becoming more active. Read the study.
Healthy ageing also depends on retaining the physical abilities that allow you to live independently. Carrying shopping, climbing stairs, getting off the floor and recovering after a stumble all require a combination of strength, aerobic fitness, coordination and balance. When those abilities are not used, they tend to become harder to call upon when you need them.
One cohort study followed 1,702 adults aged 51 to 75 and found that an inability to maintain a ten-second one-legged stance was associated with an 84 per cent higher adjusted mortality hazard during follow-up. The result does not turn a balance test into a diagnosis, nor does it prove that practising one-legged standing will extend a person’s life. It shows that balance can offer useful information about physical function and deserves a place alongside strength and aerobic work. Read the balance study.
Taken together, the research supports a grounded message: a health plan should help you preserve or improve the physical capacity required for the life you want to lead. That requires movement, and the most useful program is one that starts from your current ability rather than an idealised version of where you think you should be.
Why body weight can hide meaningful change
Once regular exercise is in place, measurement can help you see whether the plan is producing the intended result. Body weight is easy to track, but it cannot explain what has changed beneath the number on the scale. Someone can lose weight while also losing muscle, while another person can remain at the same weight after reducing body fat and gaining lean mass. Those outcomes call for different decisions even though a bathroom scale may make them look similar.
An InBody 580 body composition scan provides a more detailed estimate by using bioelectrical impedance analysis. The report includes estimated skeletal muscle mass, body fat, total body water and segmental distribution. This gives us a more useful baseline for tracking body-composition changes than body weight alone.
The scan still has clear limits. It estimates body composition; it does not measure complete fitness or diagnose illness. Hydration, recent food intake and exercise can also affect bioelectrical impedance results, which is why comparison scans are more meaningful when they are completed under similar conditions.
When we review the results, the aim is not to admire a collection of numbers. We use them to ask better questions. Are you preserving muscle while losing body fat? Is your current exercise program creating the change it was designed to create? Does the next training phase need more resistance work, a different progression or more recovery? A scan becomes useful when its findings influence what you do next.
What VO2 max adds to the picture
Body-composition testing and VO2 max assessment answer different questions. An InBody scan estimates what your body is made of, while VO2 max testing examines how effectively your body uses oxygen when physical demand rises.
VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise and is widely used as an indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness. In a cohort of 122,007 adults referred for treadmill testing, higher cardiorespiratory fitness was associated with lower long-term mortality. The lowest-fitness group had about five times the adjusted mortality hazard of the elite group in that clinical population. Because the study was observational and used estimated treadmill fitness rather than direct breath analysis, it shows a strong association rather than proving that one score determines a person’s lifespan. At Supercell Health, VO2 max and metabolic breath analysis measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production during controlled exercise. The results can help identify aerobic capacity, thresholds and individual training zones, giving us a clearer basis for deciding how hard, how long and how often someone should train.
The number is a starting point rather than a trophy. A person returning to exercise may need time to build an aerobic base at manageable intensities, while an experienced athlete may benefit from carefully programmed higher-intensity intervals. In both cases, testing helps us choose an appropriate training dose, and consistent training creates the adaptation we later reassess.
Turning test results into a program you can follow
Testing has little value if it leads to a generic workout that ignores the person expected to complete it. A program may look impressive on paper but fail because it assumes mobility the client does not have, demands more time than their week allows, or increases the load faster than they can recover.
A structured exercise program should begin with the client’s current health, training history, age, experience, goals and available time. Injuries, movement restrictions and relevant medical guidance also need to be considered, along with the way the person responded to their previous training block. These details affect the choice of exercises, the weekly schedule, the starting intensity and the rate of progression.

Someone returning after a long break may begin with regular walking and two short strength sessions each week, while an experienced client may use individual heart-rate zones, progressive resistance and planned recovery. The exercises differ because the starting points differ, but both programs should remain clear, manageable and measurable.
Biology influences how each person responds, although it should never be used as a vague reason to make exercise unnecessarily complicated. A personalised program still needs specific exercises, a schedule that fits real life and a clear way to track progress. Where paid services genuinely help
Paid support earns its place when it improves clarity, safety, structure or accountability. An InBody scan may show whether muscle and fat are changing in the intended direction. VO2 max testing may reveal cardiorespiratory capacity and useful training zones. Coaching can bring those findings together in a program, then adjust that program as the person’s response becomes clearer.
Recovery services may also support the wider plan, particularly when training demands and recovery needs are understood. What they cannot do is compensate for a routine with no meaningful movement. A supplement cannot build strength when the muscles are never challenged, and a sophisticated assessment cannot improve fitness when the report does not lead to action.
This is why I would rather tell someone to begin with a repeatable exercise routine than sell them another service they are not ready to use well. The best next step is not automatically the most expensive or technically advanced option. It is the step that addresses the person’s actual need and can be followed consistently enough to produce change.
Begin with a week that fits your life
If you have been waiting for the perfect program, begin by designing a realistic week. Choose a walking time you can protect, add two strength sessions that suit your current ability, break up long periods of sitting, and include balance or mobility work where it is appropriate. Give that routine time to settle before adding more volume or intensity.
People with a medical condition, unexplained symptoms, a recent injury or concerns about exercising safely should speak with an appropriate health professional before increasing their activity. Starting carefully is not a sign of low ambition; it is how you create a foundation that can support steady progress.
Once the routine exists, measurement can make it more precise. Body-composition testing can help track changes in muscle and fat, VO2 max assessment can clarify cardiorespiratory fitness, and a structured program can connect those findings to your goals. Professional support is most useful at this stage because it gives direction to the effort you are already prepared to make.
Exercise does not need to be extreme to improve your capacity. It needs to suit your starting point, appear regularly in your week and progress as your body adapts.
